I only have the first game, I think I may have played Croc 2 once years ago but I can't remember. So which do you think is better and why?

It's got to be the first game - Croc: Legend of the Gobbos felt like a 3D implementation of 2D platform games, which are my all-time favourite genre, and in my opinion it worked really well. In my view it's rather more solid than the second one, which lost a fair few points with me for throwing out almost everything that made the first game enjoyable to me (your mileage may vary ). Also it had that evil snowhead level. Mind you, that's not to say that I didn't like Croc 2, it's just that it was *too* different (and perhaps too similar to other, less-appealing 3D platform games that were flooding the market at the time), to the point that it just didn't feel like a sequel to me. I'm going to play through both again at some point in the near-ish future, too, when I have the time. I suspect that my viewpoint will still be the same afterward.

Croc 2 was great, but Legend of the Gobbos was somewhat more original and felt more 'epic' in certain places. Also, the soundtrack was incredible, whereas Croc 2 had a solid, but not-so-incredible soundtrack.

I agree with proog. I loved the backgrounds (eek, they're incredible) and the levels. The way that they used not a single line of dialog also made it feel quite special. But I still really liked Croc 2, just the first one more.

Finally got to play some of Croc 2 tonight. My friend found his demo and let me borrow it. Not enough for me to judge the game, but I see what you all mean. It didn't really wow me at all, thought it was disappointing after playing the original Croc. So I'll just vote for Croc 1... heheheh... The demo came with the EA Classics "Value Series" edition of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos PS1 version. I never knew EA had anything to do with Croc, and doesn't a game have to sell a LOT of copies to be rereleased in a new edition?

I never knew EA had anything to do with Croc EA were, at least in Europe (I don't know about elsewhere) Fox Interactive's distributor, if my memory serves me correctly - that's about the extent of what they had to do with Croc. I had no idea that they packed in a Croc 2 demo with that release of the game, though - that's news to me! Yep. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos sold well over a million copies, to my knowledge, although I don't know how much more than a million it sold.

It's true, in Portugal, Croc games were distributed by Electronic Arts Portugal.

Wait... I thought Fox Interactive was the distributor. If not, what did Fox even do? Argonaut made the game... Anyway, I like Croc 2 better, probably just because I played it first. Originally we just had both demos, but the full version of Croc 2 became available first. It has an interesting story, and I guess it's easier. (Call me a baby, but I got seriously frustrated in Croc 1 trying to hit the buttons to blow up the sheep.) Plus it has better music, and the graphics are a lot prettier (Croc 1 has fairly ugly graphics in comparison, although I have the PC version, which apparently looks worse.) Not to put down the original or anything. They're both awesome!

Wait... I thought Fox Interactive was the distributor. If not, what did Fox even do? Argonaut made the game... Fox Interactive were the publisher, and handled the marketing for the game in most countries (except for Japan - "Croc: Pau Pau Island!" was handled over there by Mitsui Media Quest). Try standing on them so that Croc is in profile with regard to the camera, and then making him walk (or jump) backwards and forwards to the relevant buttons. (Note, however, that this is not recommended if one happens to be playing the PlayStation release using an analogue controller. ) I have to admit, I always found Croc 1's graphics to have more charm (with the exception of the Microsoft Windows release, unfortunately - it was silly, though a mark of the times, to offer hard-coded support for only a select few graphics cards...). But then, I mainly think of the PlayStation versions of both games, here. The Microsoft Windows version of Croc 2 is *incredibly* pretty - much more so than the PlayStation release of 2 was. (I can only assume that perhaps the cancelled Dreamcast port of Croc 2 may also have looked like this. The only screenshots that were ever issued showed it looking just like the PlayStation version, though - but it's entirely possible that they just redistributed PlayStation shots for publicity. )

Surely you jest! ... Nope. Speaking of which, why doesn't the orange jester dantini in Croc 1 have a mouth?

Croc! Legend of the Gobbos captured my heart and still has it in it's clutches all these years later. I'm beginning to find I am in the same position as Forte Wily here, I loved 2D platformers and Croc simply had everything a 2D game did, in 3D with an incredible 'real' instrumental soundtrack as aposed to those MIDI/8-Bit tunes.
Croc 2 had the same music... just horribly remixed to tell the truth... they were all good tracks just that they killed the original feel to the Croc style. Croc 2 also completely blew away the proportions of every character, why are Croc and Dante the same size and everything else is 2-5x as big? Why are the sinister Dantini Demons/Warlocks Pink? The vehicles were cool... for the first time you played, after that you begin to despise the fact that each race is THE EXACT SAME! Gobbos lacked a tail which was what I had always appreciated on something so small and cute, so I guess the mainland Gobbos don't learn the art of tail whipping to defend themselves? They also looked so clumsy as characters.
However, Croc 2 was a fun sequal, could have been loads better but it still got a decent 8.5/10 rating on my behalf, where as Croc got a full 10/10.
Not a game after Croc has ever been able to capture me so much, it's all the same these days... beautiful graphics/realism... no heart or decent story, all the games have similar stories with minor changes and so on. Croc and many of the other very late 90s games I played and still own today will always beat a 2006 and onward game, always.

Wow. That's all I can say. Wow. I wish I could share my thoughts and feelings as accurately as you do, rexhunter99. Just for the record, I feel the same. Sometimes I play Croc just to stare at the backgrounds or watch the intro (which doesn't play very well... ) Anyway, I like the older games too, which is why I like little kid games like Fatty Bear.
